A Flow Diagram Of Two Theories Of Self-injury.

Hyperstress: an
overload that occurs when stressful events pile up and stretch the limits of a person's adaptability .

Dissociation: Dissociation is a psychological state or condition in which certain thoughts, emotions, sensations, or memories are separated from the rest of the psyche. For this reason, it is sometimes referred to as "splitting."

I've never seen self injury broken down this way. I like this diagram a lot. It seems the issues sit looming then the land mine comes then we have to find a way to relieve the results of the explosion....self injure. I really like that diagram.

Hi Austin, I know what you mean, I related to it as well. For all the complexities of SH and allowing for our indivualality it seems to sum it up ...

thanks for dropping by... :)

love this diagram - strange how simply it can be explained.

sometimes i'm both hyperstressed and dissociative - which 99.9% of the time ends up with self injury.

Im probably more on the hyperstressed side HF&L and seemed incredibly reactive to the stressors... usually anger/rage, being emotionally/phsically hurt. I had incredibly black and white thinking and anger is still something I don't deal with well although at now I deal with it more 'appropriately'
